The Pavilion is a new structure sited in the historic Gibside Walled Garden. Created as part of a two-year HLF and National Trust initiative ‘Redesign Renew Revive’ which encourages new ways of seeing and learning about the history of Gibside estate.

Following a series of projects with Interior Architecture students from Northumbria University, a concept by Allard Newell was selected. Jardine Couture were commissioned to re-interpret and produce a design for a contemporary piece. The idea brings together two simple architectural elements, a seat and a wall, and explores flexible display ideas.

The resulting pavilion offers visitors a place to dwell within the walled garden, as well as providing a framework for an ongoing series of temporary exhibitions.

Designed and produced by Jardine Couture, 2017.

Materials: c24 timber / mild steel / WISA plywood.

Build team: Peter Dixon, Allard Newell, Max Ansell-Wood, Jamie Clare, Ben Couture.
